Excessive Sweating
Hyperhidrosis
In some people, the body’s mechanism for cooling itself down is over active – so over active that they may sweat 4 or 5 times more than is necessary, or normal.
This can be uncomfortable, embarrassing, life inhibiting and anxiety inducing. It can disrupt all aspects of a person’s life from relationships, career choices, recreational activities and self confidence.
This kind of sweating is a medical condition called Hyperhidrosis.
What causes it?
There are two types of hyperhidrosis, Primary and Secondary.
Secondary hyperhidrosis is as a result of an underlying condition, or a side effect of certain medications.
You should see you GP before treatment to exclude this. Primary hyperhidrosis is a medical condition on its own and likely started at puberty and has not changed.
The case of Primary hyperhidrosis is not known.
What treatment are available?
There are many treatments available on prescription including, antiperspirants, creams and lotions, medications, laser, surgery and Botulinum Toxin.
Botulinum Toxin (BTX) is licensed to treat underarm sweating since 2004. Research has shown BTX to be safe and effective in treatment of excessive sweating in armpits, feet and hands.
How does BTX work?
BTX temporarily blocks the secretion of the chemical responsible for activating the body’s sweat glands.
What does the treatment involve?
The area is marked up in grids and tiny superficial injections are given spaced approximately 2cm apart.
Most patient report tolerable discomfort rather than pain.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are uncommon, you may notice some redness, swelling, tenderness and bruising.
Very occasionally treatment does not work. When injected into hands and feet there may be transient muscle weakness.
How long will it last?
Results usually last for 6-8 months. It may take up to 2 weeks to see the full benefits.
Am I suitable?
If you have a confirmed diagnosis of Primary hyperhidrosis and other treatments have failed, it is likely you would be suitable subject to medical history.
You may not be suitable if you have a neuromuscular disorder such as Myasthenia gravis, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, any previous allergic reaction to BTX, skin infection at the site or have had certain antibiotics in the last 3 days.
